alex and i averaged 10 miles of walking per day in rome. i really like our travel style: we scope out a few things we want to see or do and then leave the rest of the hours for impromptu adventures. we had no problem exploring a random side street, admiring neighborhood homes, or people watching at a corner café. but main takeaway was probably that the roman empire was goated. after spending a day in montepulciano, a tiny tuscan town in the countryside, alex and i realized that there wasn’t much to do beyond admiring the scenery and getting tipsy off wine. we had booked four nights here, thinking it would be a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the local italian experience. but, while the wine was great and the people were nice, the town itself felt quite manufactured and tourist-centric. we decided to adopt the “fuck it, we ball” mentality. i scraped together a convoluted route to a (real) farm bed and breakfast in a north italian mountain village called ritten, about an hour from bo
