I don't have as much depth in Marcuse as I do in Weber, so probably this week we will work more from the texts in front of us and rely more heavily on the collective awareness of the class. That Marcuse is less well known and became even "neglected" (at least within the canon of Frankfurt School critical theory) is a story in itself. It is strange, especially because Marcuse was very influential in the US and, also in Germany, was the bestselling theory author of the 1960s (especially One-Dimensional Man). Paul Fleming at Cornell presented on this topic at the conference I was at in St. Louis in September. He and Cecilia Sebastian are currently co-editing a special issue of New German Critique on Marcuse. (NGC is the primary journal of US Frankfurt School scholarship.) He said that NGC had only very rarely published articles on Marcuse.
