As time passes, their material nature is at risk of deterioration, loss, or destruction. Archives themselves are marked by removals and gaps. Their meanings will change over time, depending on the contexts in which researchers interpret, select, and edit them. If they are mutable, why do arguments surrounding archives so often rest on the assumption that archives are, by definition, resistant to change?4 Perhaps this is because the formal definition of an archive is “a place in which public records or historical documents are preserved.
