Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
HUS is a rare but serious disease that affects the kidneys and blood clotting functions of infected people. Infection with HUS causes destruction of red blood cells, which can then cause kidney failure. HUS occurs as a complication of a diarrheal infection (usually E.coli O157:H7 infection). The disease occurs more commonly in children under 5 years of age than in other age groups. Anyone infected with E. coli O57:H7 or another Shiga toxin-producing E. coli(STEC) strain can get HUS. Children who are less than 5 years old, people with weakened immune systems (such as those with cancer, HIV/AIDS, or a transplant), or persons with a family history of HUS are more at risk to develop the disease. Only a small fraction of people diagnosed with E.coli O57:H7 (or STEC) infection develop HUS.
