Linux is subversive. Who would have thought even five years ago (1991) that a world-class operating system could coalesce as if by magic out of part-time hacking by several thousand developers scattered all over the planet, connected only by the tenuous strands of the Internet? There’s a popular floating theory on the Internet that a combination of the existing foundation model companies will be the end game for AI. In the near future, every company will rent a “brain” from a model provider, such as OpenAI/Anthropic, and build applications that build on top of its cognitive capabilities. In other words, AI is shaping up to be an oligopoly of sorts, with only a small set of serious large language model (LLM) providers. I don’t think this could be farther from the truth. I truly believe that open source will have more of an impact on the future of LLMs and image models than the broad public believes. There
