California Zephyr - Train Travel Message Board - Tripadvisor
I want to travel on the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco in early May. I’ve seen that everyone recommends getting a roomette but I can’t afford that as right now there is an $800 (at least) difference between coach and a room. Is it possible to do the entire trip semi comfortably in coach? Has anyone done this? Or am I better off doing the journey in two parts and getting off and staying in a hostel in one of the cities on the way? Lots of folks do the trip in coach. I'd say only stop and do an overnight if you really want to visit a place overnight. YouTube may be a good resource for you, as there are quite a few folks who like to do video reviews of their travels and offer tips. Just be aware the train can be very delayed so you might end up waiting a long time to get ont he train, or find yourself getting to your stopover way after hours.
