I give advice to folks about careers in AI policy several times a week, and I’ve noticed that some questions come up pretty often. I figured that writing this document would help scale up my advice-giving to more people (hopefully helping them!) and also make the 1:1 conversations I do have more focused. Please note that these are just my personal opinions. These opinions are informed in part by my experiences at OpenAI, in academia at ASU and Oxford, in government at the US Department of Energy, and as an affiliate of various think tanks. Those experiences probably bias me in various ways, though I am trying to speak about the field generally rather than any specific organization.
