Gallstones are common, particularly in Western populations [1-4]. Globally, the prevalence is 6.1 percent; approximately 5.4 percent of men and 7.6 percent of women have gallstones [3]. Patients with gallstone disease may be asymptomatic or may present with biliary colic or complications of gallstone disease. This topic will review the clinical manifestations of gallstone disease and evaluation for gallstones in a patient with biliary colic.
