In recent years, many leading publications such as Forbes1, Time2 and HBR3 have been touting a “portfolio” approach as the career strategy for this day and age. They say that optimizing for a single path, as traditionally expected, is no longer the only way - or the best way - to design a career. Rather, it is possible to have many careers over the course of one’s professional life. Perhaps, even multiple at the same time. As somebody who has always had trouble sticking to one “lane,” I love this idea. I’ve decided that building a portfolio career for the current stage in my life looks like this: keeping a full time job that confers a stable salary and benefits, while using nights and weekends for side hustles and passion projects - such as this newsletter.
