Retention metrics at Pinterest
I start by generating a qualitative hypothesis for the frequency of use, based on the natural frequency of the use case. Before doing that, I select the use case for which I’m defining the retention metric. Once I’ve chosen the use case, I refer to the Natural Frequency in the use case map. I determine this Natural Frequency—how often users experience the problem—through qualitative user research. This helps me establish the qualitative hypothesis for the frequency of the retention metric. For example: With Pinterest, I selected the use case “Browsing Interests.” My qualitative hypothesis for the frequency is weekly. Although some users might browse daily when working on a project, just browsing interests isn’t likely to become a daily habit for most users. To validate the qualitative hypothesis of user engagement frequency, I start by creating a frequency histogram to measure the quantitative usage data. This histogram helps me determine if the actual user activity aligns with the h
