I told myself I would take a break from writing about all things computer science related. After moping to my friends that this major has exhausted me I said I was done. I’d concluded that the general culture of computer science and tech at large was sexist, racist, and so many other ists, and that I would work carefully to find a work/life separation for my own sanity. And yet, there’s now an Ed post from a UC Berkeley professor going viral. Specifically, from Jonathan Shewchuk, the tenured professor who teaches UC Berkeley’s famous machine learning class, CS 189, where women are historically underrepresented. The simmering rage at the rampant misogyny within the EECS department, which for years bound non-male students together through shared suffering, has now exploded because finally, finally, we have something that says look, we weren’t lying.
