On Sep 1, 2022, I was 11 days away from starting one of the most important internships of my life when my mother passed away. Initially, I didn’t feel it at all. I was fine for several days before it hit me. Then suddenly, I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t stay awake, couldn’t eat. There were times when I couldn’t breathe. A few weeks after that, my boyfriend and I broke up. We had been together for 5 years. He left for India, while I decided to stay in the US. So there I was, all alone in this country, feeling like a truck hit me. Since then, I have realized one thing about grief — it is the most powerful emotion you will ever experience. It plays with your mind. My grief convinced me that everything that happened was entirely my fault because I didn’t try harder. It told me I could have saved my mom somehow. Or gone to India with my ex-boyfriend. It kept whispering that I was not good enough. So that was the mindset I had developed when I started working on my internship. I was overwhelmed
