We want to end the relationship but we’re terrified. We imagine upon hearing our wishes they may sob uncontrollably probably go into depression. They may do something unthinkable like quit their job, become an alcoholic, or commit suicide. It would be our fault. And we can’t bear to have that weight on our shoulders. So, we procrastinate. Alternatively. they could go into an uncontrollable rage. Hurling insults at us punching walls while screaming “if I can’t have you then no one will”. They may accuse us of wasting their time and leading them on- though it’s not true. We can’t live with the guilt or the violence that may pursue. So, we procrastinate. All these play out very dramatically in our minds so we decide to put it off for a more convenient time. To soothe the guilt, we reason why we couldn’t; they are about to write their finals, it’s almost Valentine’s Day, they are still mourning their dog, or they have the flu.
