F or decades, one of the fiercest debates in sociology and urban studies has been about the nature of gentrification: does the arrival of new, better-educated, upwardly-mobile neighbors inevitably result in the displacement of long-term residents? It has long been assumed that gentrification and displacement must go hand-in-hand. Indeed, when she first introduced the concept almost 60 years ago, Ruth Glass wrote that “once this process of ‘gentrification’ starts in a district it goes on rapidly until all or most of the working class occupiers are displaced.” But in the last twenty years, a number of researchers have questioned this relationship. While there’s a large body of qualitative research supporting a link between gentrification and displacement, recent work using large-scale quantitative data paints a more complex picture.
