GPT-3 Prompt Engineering: Art of figuring out an undocumented API

GPT-3 Prompt engineering is trending as a new skill one should learn to use generative AI models. Is it engineering? Is it art? Or is it just plain simple hacking? A little bit of all I'd say. Can it be more engineering and less hacking though? After all that's what software engineers expect from their tools. A prompt is an instruction you type in for the language model to either 1) do something with the text or context you provide or 2) come back with an answer to an open ended request.
