Traditionally, you're supposed to respond to this some kind of complicated argument featuring subjects-of-a-life and analogies to disabled humans and so on. But I think that's stupid. The reason to care about animals is that you probably already do. Look at the social media response (in the Anglosphere) when someone is arrested for cruelty to dogs, cats, or horses. You will see passionate, fervent hatred directed at animal abusers. People will call them monsters, irredeemably evil, the worst dregs of humanity. Some people will fantasize about them getting the death penalty. Abusers of dogs, cats or horses are despised at a level equaled only by pedophiles. Similarly, what does an author stereotypically do if they want to show off how evil a villain is? They have the villain kick the dog. What do they do if they want to show how good the hero is?
