i revisited this today (Maggie Appleton's A Brief History & Ethos of the Digital Garden, because it was cited on someone's personal website) and it cemented this disillusionment i've been feeling with this dream of the garden over the stream. because i see a lot of websites claiming this dream - "the digital garden", but nowadays it's quite rare to come across one that feels genuinely walkable and alive (or at least, actively tended to). idk, it almost feels like there's something reality-denying about the way they present themselves, perpetually in-progress, "growing", "evergreen". when most personal wikis feel like standing water. i think i'd be less disillusioned if weren't for the fact that these gardens seem to borrow the aesthetics of life without also taking up the aesthetics of death. rot. old age. disrepair. maybe this is an offshoot of my belief that everything that lives has an age. or maybe it's just my mind that doesn't jive with the concept of "evergreen".
