“I’m not good at writing.” …is what I want to say. I like to acknowledge my own shortcomings, deflecting criticism with a wink — see, I already know. But self-awareness isn't intended as humor so much as a proactive defense against shame. There's nothing more humiliating than hearing someone point out your flaws, especially when it catches you by surprise — like being told you have spinach in your teeth, or an unzipped fly, or unknowingly mispronouncing a word before a scrutinizing audience.
