The absence of meaningful relationships with other people makes individuals feel lonely, worthless, hopeless, helpless, and powerless (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Cacioppo & Patrick, 2008; Hartup & Stevens, 1997). In fact, social psychologist Arthur Aron has suggested that a central human motivation is “self-expansion.” This refers to the desire to overlap or blend with another person, gaining access to their knowledge, insights, and experiences, thereby broadening and deepening one’s own experience of life (Aron, Aron, & Norman, 2004; Fivecoat et al., 2014).
