Document version 1.0.1 ## Abstract This paper describes a protocol whereby Bitcoin users can buy proof-of-work from miners by creating an output that miners can redeem with a nonce. The transaction can be used to verify that work was done. There are many applications to proof-of-work in Bitcoin beyond creating block headers[^1]. Value in Bitcoin is realized by superior cooperation. People in Bitcoin need to be able to communicate value to one another reliably. The Handicap Principle[^2][^3] says that the only reliable signal that can be transmitted over an adversarial channel is one that demonstrates opportunity cost.
