This essay is based on my famous "dragon speech", without doubt the finest and most intense lecture of my life. It is considerably toned down from the lecture; you just had to be there to appreciate the histrionics. A video of the lecture can be found on YouTube: I have a link to it here. It was in 1975 that I first encountered the notion that a computer could be used to play games. I had used the computer for some years as a scientific tool, and so the idea that it could be used for play was quite novel. The concept fascinated me, and so I began to explore its possibilities. I wrote my first game on an IBM mainframe, in FORTRAN with punched cards. It was a strategy wargame on a hexgrid. At the same time, the microcomputer revolution was dawning, and in January of 1977 I acquired my first computer: a KIM-1 with a 6502 and 1K of RAM.
