Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants who met and married shortly after arriving in the US. The Tan's never stayed in one place for very long, and moved constantly. After living in several cities in California, the Tan's settled down in Santa Clara. Due to a childhood of constant adjustment, Tan had great difficulty making friends and turned to her imagination for company. At the age of eight, Tan entered an essay writing contest and won. She has said that this was the moment when she first became interested in writing fiction. Despite her new found love for literature, her parents had other plans.
