I am obsessed with going to the optometrist. I find it to be an experience like no other, beguiling and thrilling at the same time. Perhaps, in an abstracted way, it could even be considered erotic. Ever since my eyes started failing me in the wake of my concussion, I have presented myself to the eye doctor with a misshapen childlike glee, one that’s a little too chipper towards the receptionists who cannot possibly understand what about my being there could so enthrall me. It is not so much that I enjoy doctors (in the Munchausen’s sense or otherwise) or, as one might suspect, that my doctor is particularly attractive (though he does wear glasses, perhaps to circumvent accusations of conspiracy.) No, for me the reason this is all so exciting is because a visit to the optometrist is distinct from all other modes of seeing and all other modes of being seen.
