Some people get used to sloppy thinking in many areas of their lives, thinking that those situations are low-stakes or just for fun, so they don't matter. While, of course, the effort we put into our thinking should depend on the importance of that topic, without a habit of engaging in critical thinking and lots of practice doing it well, it's unlikely we'll suddenly be able to turn it on effectively when it actually matters. Aiming to use critical thinking only when it really matters is like not bothering to learn to swim well, assuming you'll be able to figure out how to swim once you've fallen overboard. Except, without critical thinking, you won't even know when you've fallen overboard.
