It was 1998, about a year after I’d left Lookout Records, and I was completely burnt out on music, or so I thought. In the preceding year I’d barely bought a record or gone to a gig. I only ended up at this particular gig because some friends were playing. I didn’t know anything about the Weakerthans except that the singer had been in Propaghandi, and I might not have paid that much attention to them except that I noticed them setting up a steel guitar. I’ve always had a weakness for country music, you see, at least the old time, classic variety as played by Hank Williams, Sr. As it turned out, they didn’t even use that steel guitar until one of the last songs, and even then, only for a minute.
