I was once asked a question on IG that initially seemed like the most basic, fundamental question, but it really got me thinking. Someone asked, “When you are putting a look together, where do you start?” On the surface, it seems like that is an easy one to answer, but is it? Where do you start? I had to think about this for a bit. At first, I thought maybe it is just intuition. I’m such a pro that I just grab things for the day based on feeling, and then the next day I iterate off of that, and so on. But that actually isn’t true. And I think I was hoping it was, because the truth is much, much less sexy and artistic. The first place I start is… function. Like, how boring is that? There is something so ordinary about it, so unimaginative and conventional. But the more I dug into it, the more I realized that functional considerations are actually what make a look feel correct and also a little wrong.
