Must musturbation and demandingness lead to emotional disorders?
Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) hypothesizes that musturbation and demandingness lie at the core of most emotional disturbances. Some people, however, insist on making grandiose demands on themselves, on others, and on life conditions and yet do not seem to be notably disturbed. Usually, they resort to self-deception, rationalizing, pollyannaism, withdrawal, distraction, supernaturalism, alcohol and drugs, relying on supporters, and desirelessness. These methods at times seem to work but have their own serious limitations. A better method, advocated by REBT, would seem to be for people to keep their strong desires, goals, and preferences, but to curb their tendencies to escalate them into arrogant, insistent demands and musts.
