We live in a weird world where we can have a completely coherent conversation with a pile of silicone and metal. ChatGPT (and related Large Language Model powered chatbots) are pretty amazing. Ten years ago, despite playing around with generative text models and working with natural language processing professionally, I would not have believed how good language models would get by now. When you really think about it, it's a bit odd that we can have completely coherent conversations with other blobs of meat as well. Our brains are clumps of cells, wired up in complex ways, that produce (usually) coherent language, conveyed through air compressed by our lungs and vocal cords to produce waves that jiggle the little hair cells in your ears.
