Luck is often spoken about as if it were weather, something that drifts in by chance, brushes past you, and moves on. I think that’s only part of the truth. There’s the randomness no one could script, yes, but also the quiet ways we place ourselves where it’s more likely to find us. You can’t summon lightning on command, but you can choose to stand somewhere it’s more likely to strike. One phrase I keep coming back to is increasing the surface area of luck. Imagine luck as rain, and surface area as the size of the vessel you hold out to catch it. You can stand there with a thimble, or you can bring a wide, shallow bowl. Over time, I’ve noticed that the way you move through the world shapes what kind of luck you meet. Some actions are soft and magnetic, because they draw things toward you without your chasing them.
