1 It sometimes makes me sad how dissatisfied many people around me are, even very capable people who have achieved a lot and are at stable places in society. I wouldn’t say that these people are unhappy, because they regularly have a good time with their friends — but they compare themselves with others so frequently and conclude that they’re not as close to the top as they should be, they are annoyed or disapproving more often than they are grateful or respectful, and phrases like “f*** my life” slip their mouths so often that one might question how much they actually enjoy life. I would say that the highest achievers might actually be among the least satisfied. Working with automatic machines and correct answers can accustom you to feeling like everything should work quickly and efficiently, and upset you when something in the world is not so.
