The salesman before me celebrated as the signature went onto the document that legally binds car ownership. This was maybe the fifth signature that was needed across maybe four different documents. The salesman ran through the details simultaneously like a siren singing a lullaby and a lawyer machine gunning legalese. A fair competition for any lecturing professor reading off text-filled slides, I can feel my eyes glaze over, hypnotized to move as instructed. A part of me was also greatly amused, in an anthropological sense. I once did sales when I was younger. Not the kind of sales that closed big contracts with fat bonuses. It was the type that would come up to you while you’re shopping and convince you to sign up for a credit card kind of sales. I got pretty good at it too! At my peak, I calculated that if I did that job full time, I could make $100,000 a year, off of something like selling 50 credit cards a day.
