The Exchange: Daniel Alarcón | The New Yorker
The most recent issue of Zoetrope: All Story, a quarterly magazine devoted to short fiction and one-act plays, showcases the writing of young Latin American authors. It was co-edited by the Peruvian-American writer Daniel Alarcón, and guest designed by the filmmaker and artist Guillermo del Toro. Alarcón’s fiction has been published by this magazine; he is also the author of two books, “War by Candlelight” and “Lost City Radio.” This week, he kindly agreed to The Exchange. Can you explain to our readers the motivation behind the Latin American Issue of Zoetrope? If I recall correctly, we first discussed this idea in the spring of 2008. It was Michael Ray, the editor of Zoetrope , who proposed it. A few months later, I met Diego Trelles Paz, a novelist and editor (and fellow Peruvian), who had just finished putting together an anthology of young Latin American writers called “The Future is Not Ours.” I suggested that he and I take on the project together and share the work.
