Once, when I was 24, I was at a test screening in Stockholm for a documentary I was involved with. We had gathered a group of filmmakers and were watching the film together at a small private cinema in Hornstull. At the critique session afterward, I made several suggestions for changes to the editor. I felt perceptive and attuned to what could bring the film alive. Later, when we went over the notes in the cutting room I noticed something: every change I proposed had been voiced by someone else right before me. I had taken their observation and repeated it, often with more force and less nuance. Seeing my behavior in the notes from the session made me feel exposed, ashamed.
