Practical questions about causation have been a preoccupation of economists for several centuries. Adam Smith wrote about the causes of the wealth of nations (Smith 2003). Karl Marx was interested in the transition of society from capitalism to socialism (Needleman and Needleman 1969). In the twentieth century the Cowles Commission sought to better understand identifying causal parameters (Heckman and Vytlacil 2007).1 Economists have been wrestling with both the big ideas around causality and the development of useful empirical tools from day one. We can see the development of the modern concepts of causality in the writings of several philosophers.
