Riboswitches: A Common RNA Regulatory Element
RNA plays a significant role in regulating a diverse set of cellular processes in all life. One of the recently discovered forms of genetic regulation by RNA is the riboswitch. This ribonucleic acid sequence is most often found at the 5' end of the untranslated region of bacterial mRNA. The hallmark of this regulatory element is the ability of the RNA to bind to a cellular metabolite in the absence of accessory proteins, to determine whether the message should be expressed. How do these RNAs specifically bind a small ligand molecule and then change shape in such a way that they can regulate gene expression?
