USTC prepares high-performance nacre-mimetic composites with designable cryptic coloration and electromagnetic wave-transparent performance | EurekAlert!

Modern industry requires multi-dimensional performance design of the protective structural materials. In nature, many organisms maintain the mechanical strength required for defense and achieve camouflage effects at the same time. Among them, nacre demonstrates a fracture toughness far beyond its constituent components due to the sophisticated multi-level microstructure. How to effectively apply this structural design to engineering material systems remains a challenge. In a study published in Advanced Materials, a research team led by Academician YU Shuhong from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported a structure-function integrated design of nacre-mimetic alumina (Al2O3)-based (NMA) composites.
