This world is full of conflicts, and full of things that cannot be reconciled. It saves millions of lives with breakthrough drugs, lifts billions out of poverty and starvation, sends love notes and financial support across the planet with the swipe of a finger. But, as an old saying goes, the mind is a wonderful servant and a terrible master. I would add that it is a particularly terrible master during turbulent times. It can build the ship, but it cannot weather the storm. We Moderns often make our minds our masters. We fetishize them and their supposedly rational thoughts, placing them on a gleaming pedestal as the true—and, for some, only—measure of human worth.
