The first took place with the arrival of Jesuit missionaries in 1549 and lasted for nearly a century before the religion was banned and its adherents were forced to convert or hide their faith. In that time, Christianity reached its peak popularity, with almost 300,000 Christians in a population of 15 to 20 million.
