In October 2021, I attended a literary reading that was also a twilight moment. Like many things, I wouldn’t understand the importance of it until after it passed: Megan Boyle, Blake Butler, Sean Thor Conroe, Fiona Alison Duncan, Leo Johnson, Zans Brady Krohn, Nico Walker, and Rachel Rabbit White on the mic at KGB Bar in New York City. Something was ending around then, of alt-lit as the last major literary subculture (though people writing alternative literature and hanging out in downtown Manhattan is forever). Many of the writers at KGB Bar that night were published by Thought Catalog or in Tao Lin’s Muumuu House and directly shepherded by mentors like Tyrant Books’ late Giancarlo DiTrapano, or by his stylistic legacy.
