Dickinson for bomb calorimetry at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in 1910. It consists of a stirred-water, constant-temperature jacket containing a covered cavity in which could be placed a calorimeter can, filled with water and containing an electrical heater and the combustion bomb or other reaction vessel. The calorimeter jacket could be maintained at a temperature near 28° Celsius, constant to a few thousandths degree Celsius by means of a toluene-filled temperature sensing device. The water in the calorimeter could be stirred and its temperature measured by a platinum resistance thermometer. Before construction,
