Recently Z received some questions about the relevance or importance – or the reverse – of what goes under the label postmodernism. We have in the past, when it was a more pressing topic, or seemed to us to be, at any rate, published a number of essays and even debates on the matter. These are easy to find on ZNet. But by happenstance we recently saw a reproduction of a long forum reply that Chomsky gave to related queries. We quite liked it, and thought it might be useful to recirculate. The only editing below, from the original – which was placed online in November 1995 – was to remove names of people Chomsky was answering.
