After a few nights recovering in Karakol, I was eager to get back out in the mountains. Online at least, people seem to have little good to say about Naryn, but I preferred it to Karakol despite, or perhaps because of, the latter’s reputation as the Riviera of Kyrgyzstan, or at least its Tahoe. Naryn is an honest regional city, with the expected facilities and a bit of bustle and grunge. Karakol, on the other hand, is an unpleasant mix of sprawl, tourism, and decay. It did not help that I was there during two days of heavy rain, which overwhelmed the city’s sewers and gave the place a faint fecal bouquet. The guest house I stayed at, recommended by Kevin, was pleasant enough, with flat tent spots in an orchard of ripe cherries and apricots free for the picking. I made up for a week of durable and calorie-dense utility food, buying eggs and vegetables at the store to supplement the fruit. Unfortunately the owners kept to themselves, and the few other guests were mostly German and Swiss
