As a teenage girl, I watched the meteoric rise of Elizabeth Holmes from the sidelines of the Internet. Like many ambitious fifteen-year-olds, I fell in love with the story of a brilliant Stanford dropout who was here to save the world and make billions while doing so. I was the only girl in my high school’s math club, I spent hours each week tutoring kids whose families owned nicer houses than mine, I didn’t have the social skills to navigate my predominantly white and wealthy high school. I’m not claiming my struggle was unique or particularly tough; I only mean that the circumstances were enough to make Elizabeth Holmes very appealing to me.
