‘Learning a language is like becoming another person’ – ASPIRE LANGUAGES
My recent trip to Disneyland Paris reminded me of just how true this quote, by Haruki Murakami, is and reinforced my genuine belief that learning a language is so much more than just being able to speak another language. I know that for me personally I am more confident and assertive when speaking French than when going about my day to day life and using my own language, English. I am someone who generally avoids any type of confrontation, and very rarely complains or challenges bad service. Yet when using French I find myself politely and confidently taking on the world, and anyone that should get in my way! In fact, my husband jokingly nicknamed me the ‘Queue Enforcer’ during our time away and when I found myself engaged in a ‘stare-off’ with a Spanish teenager at the cereal bar at breakfast, I realised I’d released my French alter ego!
