The internet is the only virtual system which can't be controlled or turned off and is equally shared by everyone. It relies on computers for everything else: running programs, updating state, and storing data. Computers are mere extensions of their owners and are meant to be arbitrarily controlled or turned off by them. Hence, only a few are trusted enough to control programs that coordinate behavior of any significance. The Bank of America can deploy a program on their computer, call it a bank, and be taken seriously, but Bob from his basement cannot. Cryptosystems transform the internet from a mere data transmission network to an autonomous, programmable entity. Unlike programs on a computer, autonomous programs of the internet can't be controlled or turned off by anyone.
