Yep, the idol thing and the waifu thing really bug me about the big VTuber companies. The indie experience can be vastly different, though. Like, you have the option to just be yourself too and use the avatar as a shield against all the nasty stuff on the internet. That's what I do, and I find it a really pleasant way to go about it. But, well, I don't blame those who join the big companies at all. The indie route is just really, really rough, after all. Rough as in years of hard work for no pay and still no guarantee that you will ever make it big enough to earn the minimum wage. The big problem for indies is that there's just absolutely no way to get visibility until you hit the critical mass, which you most likely won't because no visibility. Contrast this to the fact that the big corporations can easily hype you to immediate success, as the original post says, as well as solve all your visibility problems thereafter with their handy schedule pages and such. Indies have no such luck, as far as I know at least. Or, well, there actually seem to be sites where you can register yourself as an indie VTuber, but I have no idea if it helps much in practice. It might still be quite hard to get visibility due to the market saturation or because viewers might just not use those sites to begin with. I guess I'll have to go research that. Anyway, the idea about indie VTubers loosely grouping up sounds like the way to go to me. It would certainly make it at least a bit easier to get visibility. No idea how it would work in practice, though. I don't even know how to get in talks with other like-minded VTubers. Having some community would be really nice, but sadly I'm really bad at joining communities. 😅
