Maryland was a different place. After getting off the train there for a two-week summer workshop, I only had to walk a few minutes before this became clear—there I was studying a car with a decal applied backwards on its hood, which, once I parsed it, advertised If You Can Think It, We Can Do It! in loopy cursive. This self-evident falsehood became more concerning when I noticed that the other decals on the side of the car advertised plumbing and AC installation services. The new climate was one of burning sunlight and bright skies. The air weighed on me, dense and humid. Big bushy trees leaned over the streets. I understood now the classic representation of a tree that we had been taught to draw in kindergarten: a thick, sloping, concave trunk, topped by a round green scrunch. Where I’d grown up on the west coast, the trees didn’t look like that, so from childhood I’d considered this a poor abstraction of a tree. But here, that’s what they really looked like.
