I'm on a mission to shrink your peer group | Louis Pereira
The more time I spend on social media, the more conviction I have about Nicheless as an alternative. As social media platforms cement themselves into the routine of our current lives, our perceived peer groups keep expanding. What was once a group of people that we interacted with face to face is now an ever increasing swarm of humans from all corners of the planet. On the face of it, that doesn't seem like a bad thing, but it is. We don't do well when we're surrounded by abundance. An abundance of food has resulted in us becoming overweight. An abundance of connectivity has resulted in us getting overjudged. So we retreat periodically, going on GM diets of our information intake. But like most others, these diets usually fail. We always return to gorge on more dopamine, and the result is a reduction in quality of both – our individual thoughts and our collective twitter timelines. With Nicheless, I hope to help people take a step back. To write their mind. To think independently. To be less performative. To publish without fear. And most importantly, to shrink their perceived peer group. I'll explain. I want Nicheless to grow into a place where you come to read the thoughts of people you know. To take a dip into the depths of your friends' minds. And to turn those excursions into conversations – both online and IRL. In the ideal scenario, I imagine a bunch of friends following each other, each publishing without fear of public judgment, and then occasionally discussing what they read and wrote about when they meet in real life. I'm yet to figure out how to make this happen, but I just thought I should put it out there. If you've got ideas, I'm all ears.
