Plato and the problem of history - Kate
A recent X post discussing the relationship between artificial intelligence and Plato’s philosophy has sparked numerous debates, many of which are only loosely connected. These debates were fueled by a new study examining AI’s emergent behaviors, widely interpreted as equating its progress toward an “ideal” state with Plato’s thought. Underpinning these debates lies a deeper issue. The findings have been presented as consistent with Plato’s metaphysics, when they more accurately reflect 20th-century Platonism, a derivative of his dialogues. Behind this confusion is a long and contested history of interpreting Plato’s philosophy, one that began in the early years of the Academy and continues to this day. To understand how such confusion arises, it is necessary to examine the interpretive challenges that have long surrounded Plato’s metaphysics and the legacy of Platonism.
