Victorian House in Riverdale Has 90 Days to Avoid Demolition
The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, a long-term care community, has promised to withhold the demolition of a historical home on its new south campus in the West Bronx, giving Nick Dembowski, president of the Kingsbridge Historical Society, 90 days to prove its historical significance. The motion was passed at the Land Use Committee on Wednesday, and again at the Board Meeting on Thursday with minor objections and abstentions from members. The decision is a compromise between conserving the potentially historic Victorian home and the Hebrew Home’s expansion. Chair of the Land Use Committee Charles Moerdler proposed that the Hebrew Home’s motion be passed on a condition—that the care facility gives their word to Moerdler to not begin demolition on the Victorian home until further research can be done. Both parties agreed to the measure, and the motion was passed with a January 1 deadline given to Dembowski, who will work with the Land Preservation Committee to determine historical significance
